The Discovery

Scientists have recently discovered over 6 trillion tons of natural hydrogen stored beneath the Earth’s crust in regions such as Mali, Albania, and France. This form of hydrogen, referred to as gold hydrogen, is not only clean and abundant, but 2% of it could power the entire planet for over 1,000 years (Nature Reviews, 2025).

Gold hydrogen forms through a combination of radioactive decay and water-rock interactions, taking place within the upper lithosphere - a shallow geologic zone much higher than the Earth’s molten core. This makes the current process of extraction relatively safe in theory.
